GLOW Hosts K-12 Initiative Breakfast Event – “From Business to Education….CDOS Works”

In May the Genesee, Livingston, Orleans, Wyoming Workforce Investment Board (GLOW WIB), Genesee Valley BOCES, and Genesee, Livingston, and Wyoming Business Education/Alliance Agencies will be hosting the Third Annual Event that includes an audience of School Superintendents, Principals, Guidance Counselors, and Teachers from several schools in the GLOW region.

A panel of Business Speakers and a School Superintendent will present support for the Career Development and Occupational Studies (CDOS) area of the New York Sate Learning Standards. The Panel includes Allan Davis of Liberty Pumps, Gary Kone of FTT Manufacturing and GLOW WIB Chairman, Mike Hodgins of Hodgins Printing, Norbert Fuest of Morton Salt, and Tom Manko, York District Superintendent.

The panel will express the need for emerging workers to have universal skills such as work ethic, critical thinking, problem solving, and technology. The WIB focuses on assisting employers to find skilled workers and workers to find jobs. The Panel will stress that when CDOS Standards are addressed, students are better prepared for college and the work environment. The Standards encourage success in life and understanding of what skills are relevant for jobs.

This unique and informative in-service opportunity for district school staff helps teachers and school staff better understand the CDOS standards. Participants will learn how local agencies can play a role in helping meet CDOS standards and better prepare students for the world of work. Staff in attendance will leave with programming ideas, contact names, and a unique perspective from a panel of business representatives who will address the relevance of CDOS to the Emerging Workforce.
