Pliant Corporation Expands in Wayne County

Will Invest $6 Million, Retain 461 Jobs and Add 55 New Jobs

Empire State Development Chairman/Upstate Daniel Gundersen today announced that Pliant Corporation, a manufacturer of plastic film, will invest $6 million in facility improvements, machinery upgrades and product line expansions at its Macedon ( Wayne County ) location. Pliant Macedon will retain its existing 461 jobs and add 55 more by year end.

“Pliant's expansion is a positive boost for the manufacturing sector in Wayne County ,” Chairman Gundersen said. “It serves as yet another example of the growing confidence in Upstate and New York State as a whole.”

The Wayne County facility, one of 26 plants Pliant owns worldwide, manufactures printed packaging for food, personal care and medical markets. Through this investment, Pliant Macedon will expand its production capability to include blown film extrusion and additional flexographic printing. Pliant will also relocate three bag converting lines from its Langley , British Columbia plant.

In recognition of its investment in New York , Empire State Development and Pliant Corp have agreed to a series of project milestones, through which Pliant will be eligible to apply for up to $150,000 in funds for machinery and equipment. Under the agreement, the funding will be phased over the year, and Pliant will receive the full amount upon reaching expansion targets set by Empire State Development.

Senator Michael Nozzolio (R,C – Seneca Falls ) said, “Pliant Corporation is a major employer for Wayne County and their decision to expand their facility in Macedon and create more jobs is tremendous news for the local economy. The manufacturing industry is an important sector for New York State and I look forward to continue working with Governor Spitzer on creating more jobs in our region and boosting the Upstate economy.”

Assembly member Robert Oaks (R,C – Auburn ) said, “Pliant Corporation's decision to enhance its facilities, upgrade its machinery and expand its workforce in Macedon is another positive chapter in the company's history as a high quality manufacturer in Wayne County . This is a great example of getting positive results when state, local and business interests work cooperatively. I look forward to Pliant Corporation and its employees having a long, successful future in our region.”

Martin Karpie, Plant Manager of Pliant's Macedon operations , said, “We are very excited about announcing our expansion project in Macedon. Pliant could have chosen several other company locations for this project, but between the outstanding workforce here in Macedon and the incentives offered from New York State , the choice became clear. We would like to thank Governor Spitzer and his team at Empire State Development for their support of this effort."
